COERR Mae Sarieng Organized Training to Promote Youth’s Understanding in Child Protection Referral System

COERR Mae Sarieng organized training to promote youth’s understanding in child protection referral system in Ban Mae La Oon Temporary Shelter on September 10, 2019 in which 51 youth of 34 female and 17 male participated and in Ban Mae Lama Luang Temporary Shelter on September 11, 2019 in which 48 youth of 31 female and 17 male participated.

The training started with exploring youth’s attitude towards situations and problems of children and youth in the Shelters. For example, the situation that children could do, that children should not do, or must not do at all, e.g. Is it safe for children aged 4, 10 or 13 to stay at home alone? Could children choose not to go to school? Should a child stealing snacks be imprisoned? Should a 2-year-old child be hit for wetting pants? What would happen if a child thought he no longer wanted to live in his house because he was being severely hit? Etc.

The next activity was to survey their awareness about problems and help: youth were assigned to brain storm about problems of children and youth of which the outcome was child behavior, natural disasters that make life more difficult, insufficient educational stationery and uniform, etc.

After youth expressed their awareness of problems and situations, the trainer then asked how they would react if they saw children in such situation. The answer was that they wished they could help. Then come to the next activity, that the trainer asked if youth were aware of organizations that could also provide assistance to the children in need. So youth were asked to give the names of organizations they knew and trust. Then the trainer introduced more about names and roles of Camp Committee, Camp-based Organizations (CBOs), and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in child protection referral system concern, that youth could go and ask for help.

Then come to the last activity that based on the Child Protection Referral System, when any sign of violence happened, youth were encouraged to observe and remember as much information as possible and then report to the reliable adults or organizations that could immediately come to help the children in the needy situation.
